Inspired by: The Colour Black

What’s that?  Black isn’t a colour?  Oh shush.

It is today.

Ready for a frenzy of photos bound to make you fall in love with this colour too?

See how this started in small doses and just got bigger as it went along?  That wasn’t intentional.

I’m really starting to think this colour has way more potential than I have ever thought possible and as much more than just an accent colour.  The colour black has canvas potential – meaning it can be large, prominent, and the colour that makes everything else come to life.

Agree or disagree?

  1. I’m honestly a white-as-the-canvas kinda girl; mixed with light woods, I just think it makes everything so airy and fresh, and if you add in a pop of color or two, you’re ready to go!
But I definitely think it’s a taste thing! For me, black is a nice neutral to add to those two above, but hey, to each their own! I really like the house, though! Love those architectural touches with the sculptures on top! Is this going to be a new series, inspired by _____________ ? If so, I am all for it! :)

    • You are preaching to the choir. I want ALL of my walls to be white, but I find myself so drawn to (other people’s) dark walls! Am I crazy? Probably! I have one very tiny chalkboard wall at home and it’s probably all I can handle for the time being until everything else is white! I too am a lover of white with natural wood – so Scandinavian and so fresh!

I am hoping to make this a series… I find myself constantly drawn to certain things then go crazy looking up all kinds of pictures relating to that thing, so I might as well put it to good use!

  2. Oh, I’m totally digging the first two photos! I’m dreaming of a black bathroom for some time now… someday, someday! And of course the last photo – Dutch (probably Amsterdam) houses with their block and tackle system are just plain awesome :)

    Love, Midsommarflicka

    • I’m not sure I’m brave enough to go for black paint on the walls yet, but we’ll see. Like you said, some day!

Those houses are GORGEOUS! I wish we had beautiful buildings like that around here!

  3. AGREE! Those black stairs are really something else! I hope I am brave enough to add colour in the new house.

  4. Black is absolutely a colour. Those who say it isn’t are just snooty IMO. I painted our basement bathroom black and I love it. Between mirrors, tile and built-in shelving, we have only one paintable wall. It’s amazing what an impact black has in the space. I can’t imagine another colour (yes, I said it) working as well. Super dramatic great personality. A lot of bang for my buck.

    • Juliaaaa!!! I miss you! Your blog was somehow ripped off my Bloglovin feed and I didn’t know, so I thought you just hadn’t posted anything in a while (which is not a judgement, just an observation – bloggers need breaks, too!), but then I thought I’d check in and there you were… posting all along! Anyway, now I need to re-add you ASAP so I don’t miss a thing!

Ok, so I am SO glad you agree that black is a colour! And I think we all need to see this black bathroom of yours! Wait… is it on your blog? I want to be brave enough to paint a room (probably also a bathroom) black, but we won’t be in this house for more than 3 more years, so I think of selling and someone hating a black wall! Ah! I love that you did it.

      • Sorry to go AWOL! I’m still here!

The black bathroom is on my blog, but not the final reveal yet. Here’s the post when I first painted it: http://homeon129acres.wordpress.com/2012/08/27/the-dark-side/. There’s a picture in this post that shows it a little better maybe (in the mirror reflection): http://homeon129acres.wordpress.com/2013/01/31/mirror-mirror-finally-on-the-wall/.

Personally, I love it and can’t see how people would hate a black wall. i bet most people walking into my bathroom wouldn’t even notice at first that it’s painted black.

Three years is long enough to be a bit creative. You could always try wall paper (there’s some fabulous black and white prints out there) or stripes. If you pick a small space or an accent wall it’s not a big deal to repaint if you (or a future buyer) doesn’t like it.

        • HAHA well you didn’t really go AWOL… I just need to figure out my blog reader, apparently :)

Thanks so much for sharing all of that!! Your bathroom looks amazing! And you’re right, it works so well that it’s not even like “woe, that bathroom is black!” It looks great!

Also good call on the wallpaper. I just saw some at Lowe’s the other day I kind of fell in love with!

  5. It’s neat to see how people incorporate black into their home decor; I LOVE rocking it in my outfits (it’s such a great base to build off of…and for accessories or splashes of color to really pop). I feel like it especially works well in contrast with white – - like in those top three photos. It actually makes me re-think incorporating it into our home decor…. Thanks for the mental jostle! ;-)

    • I find myself wearing a lot more black with big jewelry or a bright cardigan these days. It’s kind of nice to go back to basics, in a way! Those are also my favourites… shocking, right? I am seriously tempted try #1 or #2 in my bathroom!

  6. One word: YES. All of it – yes. I’m a serious black fan!

    • Yessssssss! K so I think it just needs to happen in the house already… even if I do plan to sell my house in say 2-3 years But I don’t want to paint over the darkness… That would suuuuck!
