Making Plans for Our Home – It’s Listy List Time!

making plans, writing lists, keeping goals - The Learner ObserverI started looking back to some of my handwritten notes for all of the ideas I had for our home since we moved in.  There are a lot.

No seriously…. A  LOT!!!!

I want to do like everything right now!

Making lists helps me not only keep track, but also to see how my mind changes, how my priorities change, and how much mula will be needed for my overachieving projects.  Who’s with me on this whole making lists thing?  Raise your hands, please.  One at a time… Oh wait… what was me having a teacher moment.  Sorry!

Back to making lists…

Are you ready for my biggest listy list ever of all time?

No, me either… But it needs to be made, and I need to reference it a lot because I have a lot of goals for this tiny little house of ours!

Anyone else call their lists “listy lists”?

No, me either……. awkward….

Let’s start by giving you an idea of what I’m working with.  I mean living in.

Not the biggest house on the blog, I get it… but it’s all ours and I love that about it!  Now here are the plans I (I should say ‘we’, but who am I kidding?  Alex and I both know that the list maker is me and that I am the one constantly daydreaming about what’s next in the dollhouse.  By the way, dollhouse is my affectionate term for our small home.  It works, right?) have made for the dollhouse.  These are in no particular order, in case you start to think I’m nuts for wanting to paint trim before installing the flooring…

Big list for big goals!  And that’s what we’re working with, folks… a lot to be done here, and not a whole lot crossed off just yet!  The house is just about 20% completed according to this list.  TWENTY PERCENT!  Is it me or does that sound like it might as well be nothing?  I suppose if we stay at this pace the house would be finished in… 4 years!  Being that we originally had a plan to live here for 5 years, we’d be just about done and ready to sell.  I’m hoping it can be done in a little less time, but we’ll see.

Anyone else in this same boat, or am I sailing off to the big bad sea of home DIY-ing all alone?

I hope you’ll stick around for all these plans to come to life!  I’ll be referring back to this list often to keep you updated me accountable.  Making plans is an important part of scrap-booking our journey as first-time homeowners and this post was long overdue!

Oh, and hey, if you have suggestions for any of these crazy plans, comment away!

Oh, I have a list too! And tonight I was going to blog about my bathroom progress (which is still in demo stage) but my dad ended up coming over and instead of the promised “1 hr”, 3 hrs later he left and the whole place is covered in a thick layer of dust… But progress is being made and so I’m focussing on that positive. Don’t ask the hubby his thoughts… http://thechallengesofchange.blogspot.ca/p/house-project-list.html

And here I am just talking about me… I love your house plan pics – did you do those? I should consider it if you did. It’s so good to have the list – crossing something off proves that you accomplished another task. And some tasks will fall off the list naturally when it isn’t something that fits with your plans anymore.
Oh and your house is the same size as ours (2 bed/1 office or 3 bed) and you have the added bonus of a garage. We do not. So no whining ;)

Oh this one made me laugh! haha
I did make the floor plans on a site called Floor Planner. It takes time, but it’s a great resource!
I am officially done whining! We are really blessed to have this little dollhouse, and I do love it :)

Oh Annet I love that you are totally demolishing your old bathroom for a new one. It’s going to look amazing :) Your hubby will see it and love it too!

I’m such a list-maker. I think that they help you to feel that you accomplished something. And it gives you focus!

I think that you’ve accomplished a lot already! And hey – don’t knock the dollhouse – you have a garage and a basement – two things I don’t have! I’m jealous!

You are so right about it giving you focus!

I do love the dollhouse, even if there’s no powder room on the main floor and the basement is SCARY :)

Lists help me immensely! I’m making a list for today’s projects right now, in fact! I really need to consider making a master list for our home. Just seeing yours has me thinking, “We should do that, too!” or “What a great idea!” but unless I write it down somewhere, the chances of me remembering it later on are slim to none. Also, as I mentioned on instagram, those floor plans are too cool! Definitely something we’ll need to do when we buy our first “dollhouse” ;-). Oh, and I had never “met” the big green monster before. Thanks for the link to that guy! As cool as he is now, I can only imagine how monster-licious he would be in robin’s egg blue or some other bold color. Thanks for giving me a new list project to tackle, Thalita!

Yeah I had it all in my head for a looooong time. Then is went on random pieces of paper… which caused me to repeat my thoughts. A LOT! Now having this keeps me accountable and perhaps more organized?

Ok, so now that you have seen the big green monster, do you officially vote for paint, or keep it green? It’s still a hot topic in our house!

I’m honored you would ask my opinion on this hot topic! And while I don’t want to cause any uprising in the Murray household, after looking at pictures of the big green monster again, here’s what I think: the green is a rich green, and I think if it really is going to be a statement piece, the walls would need to be a crisp white to really allow the green to thrive. So…I am leaning more toward painting it white – – that way, it could really fit with almost any color scheme or wall color – – and as you said, it would really allow the brass hardware to pop! That’s my two cents, for what it’s worth! (Though you may not want to tell Alex that.) :-)

HAHA not to worry… Alex doesn’t know about this! I want the living room walls painted white anyway (as I do my entire house…), so the green MIGHT be able to stay. Doubtful, but we’ll see. I’m thinking of switching to a more black and white with some light neutrals mixed in, so the green would stand out. That can either be good or bad… I’ll have to wait and see I guess!! Thanks for the awesome advice!

I’m such a list maker! I even make lists for ridiculous things that probably don’t actually require lists haha I’m looking forward to following along as you cross things off your list! (Sorry for the excessive use of the word list hahaha)

haha I love that the word list is in there so many times! I too, make lists for things that don’t need lists… but sometimes it’s more therapeutic than useful!

We are big list makers as well!! Love the look of the floor plans, just a little tip your inner walls can be minimized to 4 inch thickness(if you used feet rather then meters) and your outer walls are 6 inch thickness. This will also give you more accurate sq.footage in your plan.

How did you get the hard wood flooring option? I tried to look for it when we did our floor plans but didn’t see that option anywhere!

      YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!

When you select the space and name it (like hallway, bedroom, etc) if you click on the little (i) it gives you the options for types of flooring! :)

OMG. We might be the same person. I’m sitting here nodding my head through your entire post! I make lists. I make lists about making lists. I have a list of home ideas that’s umpteen miles long. Plus piles of post-it notes with random thoughts scratched on them :) I can’t wait to see how you bring your ideas to life :)

Oh my gosh I love that! HAHA I also have post its that seem to appear in the most random places… I stick them to my phone, or my planner, or my laptop… then they fall off, I find them and remember to add them to the “real” list. It’s madness!
