The Learner Observer

Hi friends,

I recently got a lovely comment from Kim over at Colors Mixed Together and she nominated me for this bloggy award.

So what is it?

Well naturally I had to look into it to find out where this award (which is EVERYWHERE in the blog-osphere) came from.  My blog-buddy Lauren had some info here, and Sopphey explained it really well too!  So with that said, here’s what I gather:

The Liebster award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 3,000 (numbers vary –  we usually see 200) or so followers.  What does ‘liebster’ mean?  It’s a German word meaning sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome.

Here are the rules for receiving this award:

1. Nominee must write 11 things about him/herself.

2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger who nominated you has asked and  create 11 questions for the bloggers you are nominating.

3. Here’s another place where numbers vary – some places say you must choose 3-5 bloggers to receive the award, and others say 11.  I’m going with 5… because 11 is a lot, and as much as I want to share the love, I can’t help but feel like every blogger out there has received one (or more) of these.

4. Go to your nominees’ blogs and tell them.

11 Facts About Me

  1. I have a birthmark on my lip, and people always think I have food on my face or that my lipstick is smudged.  It gets darker when I get a tan.  I have never really been aware of it myself unless someone points it out…
  2. I can never seem to finish a cup or glass of ANYTHING!  There is always at least a little left over.  It drives both my parents and my husband a little bit crazy!

  3. Sitting at the kitchen (I’d say dining room, but I don’t have one!) table for a meal is one of my favourite pleasures, especially if I get to sit for a long time and talk and eat and talk and eat and…. you get the point.
  4. My husband jokes that I was born in Brazil as a mistake, and it really should have been Italy because I love all things Italian – food, wine, shoes, art…. I even learned (then taught) the language a few years back.  Sadly I’m losing my Italian fluency because I never get to speak in Italian to anyone.
  5. Although I genuinely like to clean, I cannot stand doing the dishes.  I could also do without vacuuming ever again.
  6. I was baptized in April of 2009, and it’s a day/moment I think about a lot.
  7. My birthday is on Christmas.  Yep, December 25th.  It’s pretty awesome because I always get to be with my family.
  8. I kept a poster I made in the 9th grade when I went to a Backstreet Boys concert for almost 10 years.  I finally decided to get rid of, but only because I had a photo of it.  I spent HOURS on that thing…
  9. I have an irrational fear of the dark.  It all started with a scary story I heard in Elementary School and to this day I cannot have my hands or feet dangling over the edge of a couch or bed at night.  So silly.
  10. I love, love, love ice cream.  I ate gelato for lunch/dinner several times when I was in Italy and even paid €15 for gelato in Florence.  It was easily 2 liters of it and I ate it all in one sitting.  Crazy, I know.
  11. On our wedding day, Toronto easily had the worst traffic day in history!  Well, at least it felt that way… It took some of our guests over 3 hours to make the normally 40-minute drive.  Confession – I didn’t notice until after the ceremony.

11 Questions answered:

1. What did you have for dinner last night?

Cheese pizza with oregano… It was incredibly unhealthy and incredibly delicious!

2. Do you believe in soul-mates?

Yes, in two senses – the lovey-dovey way (since I have found mine) and the friendship way because I know I have soul mates in my best friends.

3. Aniston or Jolie?

I’m totally team Aniston.  Not only is she one of THE most gorgeous women I have ever seen, but her years as Rachel on ‘Friends’ completely sealed my love for her.

4. If you could live anywhere in the world and money was no object where would you live and why?

That’s a great, but tough question!  I’d have to say I’d go back to living in Brazil.  I realize now more than ever how wonderful it is to have all of your family around you.

5. Who was your celebrity teen crush?

Brad Pitt all the way.  (And yes, the Aniston thing is a coincidence).  Oh and LL Cool J for like 4 minutes.

6. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Chicken wings – because they’re super tasty and you can douse them in all kinds of sauces for flavoring.  Mouth watering.

7. Stranded on a beach, what 3 things (not people) do you bring along?

A photo of my family, a pack of Oreo’s and a glass of ice-cold milk.  Totally impractical, because let’s face it, I’d never survive on my own, so I might as well go looking at the ones I love and eating my favourite cookies!

8. Silver or gold?

Definitely gold.  It’s timeless, and when you don’t want the yellow stuff, make it white!

9. Do you believe in miracles?

10. What would you rather not be caught doing – which you do, of course?

Eating popcorn for dinner.  Oops!

11. If time travel existed and you could change an event in your past what would it be?

That’s a tough question… so tough I’m not capable of answering it.

Here are my nominees!

And your 11 questions…

  1. Where are you sitting right now?  What do you see?
  2. What was your proudest blogging moment so far?
  3. What is the first thing you would do if you won the lottery? (We’re talking BIG money)
  4. Read any good books lately?
  5. Are you a morning or a night person?
  6. What was your favourite toy growing up?
  7. If you could live in any time period, which would it be and why?
  8. How many pairs of shoes do you own?
  9. What was the last super delicious thing you ate?
  10. What’s your favourite song right now?
  11. Coffee or tea?

Alright I guess I’m all done!!  Thanks for the nod, Kim!

Have a great weekend, all!!

Yay! Congrats on your Liebster award. I actually love reading these posts when they’re by my bloggy buddies because inevitably, I learn so many new things about them – – and ways we connect.

Like you, I always leave a little bit of food on my plate or drink in my cup…not sure why! My husband gets a kick out of it…and usually finishes it off for me.

I don’t think I realized you were part Italian…and spoke it! Props to you, girl. I’m 25% Italian, but don’t speak the language. I have been to Italy twice, though…Sicily is my favorite place in the whole wide world. And yes, we ate a ton of gelato while there. Best food ever!

Exciting to hear about you baptism in 2009! Would love to hear your baptism story sometime. I was baptized as an infant, but in some ways, I wish it had been when I was older, so I could remember it better.

Hooray for your backstreet boys poster. Wise to take a picture before getting rid of it. I’m sure it was epic. And perhaps glittery?

With your fear of the dark…I understand completely. I have such a vivid imagination, and I have to reel it in at night or it will run away with me.

So much fun to learn more about you! I know these posts are time-consuming, but I appreciate you taking the time to do it.

Thanks Lauren! It was fun filling all of this out. It’s hard to think of what to say about myself though…

I’m actually not even one little tiny bit Italian… I just had a passion for art and languages in University so I studied it a lot, and the love for the food, well I think that’s a unanimous thing – who doesn’t love Italian food?!?! I would LOVE to go to Sicily! I only traveled the central parts of Italy in my 6 weeks there, so there is still so much to see!

I’d love to share my baptism story one day, actually! I came from a Catholic family, so I did have a baby baptism, but once I made the decision to devote my heart to Jesus as an adult, I knew I just had to do it!

Oh and the BSB poster was colourful, glittery, and I actually spent days meticulously cutting and gluing! The things you do as a 13-year old…

Glad I am not alone on the dark thing… it is definitely thanks to having a vivid imagination. Great thing to have, just not when you’re alone int he dark!

Thanks for reading and responding! It’s pretty awesome to know people are actually reading all of these things! :)

Ooops! Must have read too fast on the Italian part. Still, I love your LOVE of Italian culture. It’s probably the nationality I identify with the most – – I talk with my hands, love the food, love eating dinner late at night, gelato, hanging out in piazzas…it speaks to me.

I think that’s great that you got baptized as an adult when you made the decision to follow Christ. I think public commitments are so important, whether it be baptism, marriage, confirmations…. It invites the whole community in to supporting that person(s) in their decision and walking alongside them.

And of course we’re actually reading this stuff! You’re an awesome gal…why wouldn’t we? ;-)

I fixed up the Italian bit – it did sound like I’m actually Italian! :)

I have to say, I love your comments. It always makes me smile when I see the notification come up with your name on it!

Late I know, but I’m only now discovering this post. So much fun to read your responses! I love these kinds of posts where we get to learn a little more about the people we’re only really connected to online. Makes the relationship seem so much more personal. :)
