How to Paint a Doormat and Decorate a Front Door for the Holidays

Maybe you already know this about me - I have a thing for Buffalo plaid! It's true. I painted a whole wall in this pattern, and even used it in my most recent shared bedroom makeover. It's just such a good, clean plaid, and it never goes out of style (though it's certainly having a moment right now).That's why when Home Hardware invited us to share a makeover with paint, I knew I'd be incorporating this pattern into it. We're so happy that they're this week's Modern Handmade Home posts, and you can see more about that t the bottom of this post.To start out, I bought a simple 18x30 doormat with a grid pattern on it and chose paint colours from the same colour card of Beauti-Tone colours, and purchased sample pots of each. Here's exactly what I used:1x doormat3x paint samples in Shark Fin, King Kole and Philosophically Speaking3x paintbrushesI started out with four paint colours, but quickly realized that for a project this small, I wouldn't need the 4th colour because there wouldn't be enough contrast.I started with the lightest colour, as you can see below: (and yes, I made a mistake on the top left, but nothing a little paint can't fix!)Then I moved on to the mid-tone paint, which is the one I used the most of:And finally, the darkest colour, which I also used around the perimeter of the mat.In hindsight, I realize I likely could have used just the light and mid-tone colours and left the rest of the mat the charcoal grey it already was! Oh well, noted for next time!I also went into my local Home Hardware and picked up some extra decor items for our front door. We don't have the prettiest front porch, so decking it out for the holidays makes it look a little less drab!Here are a few closer peeks at the doormat in action!I love love love these Snowy Twig Christmas Trees that also light up, and the kids are so cute when they see all of the lights outside - they're insanely excited for Christmas this year! I also added in a large, battery-operated lantern, which will likely stay out here all year! I already had the containers for the trees, and the vintage tin bucket I've had for years, and truthfully, these logs have been in there for a whole year already!I also picked up a super sweet sign to add to our front entrance, and I'm in love with it!
