DIY Flower Wall Hanging

Friends, it's February, and we've officially made it through a whole month of 2017. The year has had its share of earth-shattering moments already. Moments that make us think, cry, and wonder why there is so much hatred in the world. These moments make what I do here seem so trivial, and today, as I share a flower wall hanging tutorial with you, it's not because I'm unaware, unconcerned or detached from the events surrounding us. It's because I feel that we need to go on living and making, all the while being active members in our communities who support those in need, regardless of how small or how big their needs may seem in the face of what's on the news and our Facebook feeds. So pardon me while I, along with 24 other bloggers, try to bring some pretty to your screens this week as we gear up to celebrate a day all about love, which hopefully we can do everyday! So let's get to celebrating love, shall we?Marquis and I don't normally celebrate Valentine's Day in a big way. We typically have dinner together, some wine, and spend some quality time together - something we try to do often anyway. I'm hoping that as the boys get older we can celebrate Valentine's Day as a fun way to share our love for one another, and as a way to decorate with a little pink around here! That brings me to the wall hanging...Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-42Making this was super simple, and cost me $0 because I had all of the flowers on hand. See, originally I was going to make this using real flowers, but I couldn't find any I really loved, and when I did, I realized I would need a lot of them, and they wouldn't all dry very nicely... Long story short, it made more sense to go with faux blooms. Some of these I bought years ago at the Dollar Store, so they don't need to be very fancy flowers at all, though the peonies fancy this up a bit!All I did was pull them off the stems and group them all together. I didn't end up using all the flowers I chose, but you get the idea. I actually used the leaves from the peonies as well, because I love their shape!Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-1-2Using a needle and thread (I used an off white), I poked holes into the plastic stem of the flowers and leaves and spaced them out fairly evenly, making sure to make them all different lengths as I went (which I simply did by using more or less flowers).Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-3Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-1As for the piece of driftwood I hung them on, it's actually a jewelry holder I had from a couple of years ago, and so I just repurposed it for this hanging. It already had little golden hooks on it (which I purchased at Home Depot), so I just left them on there as they were and wrapped the thread from each flower 'garland' around them, tying a single knot to hold them in place, then cutting off the excess.Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-11That's it! Super simple and easy to make with things you possibly either already have at home, or something that can be made very inexpensively!Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-33To add to the festive and pink new look of the wall hanging, I prettied up our kitchen table a bit, also using things I already had like brass candlesticks, pink candles, a scrap piece of blush lace, and some teacups.Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-16Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-23I also had the wood slices already (they were thrifted!) and the white plates are just from our dish set. Needless to say, I kept it pretty simple, but this is the first room you see when walling into our home, so it definitely feels like a breath of fresh air.Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-53Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-27I'll take any excuse to infuse the house with a little bit of flowers and pink, as I'm sure in a house full of boys, it won't be something I'll get to do often! The little teacup sets were also thrift store finds and I mixed and matched the two sets to make them look a little  more cohesive.Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-52Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-58And there you have it, folks! This flower wall hanging may just live in this spot until Spring until some real flowers start to bloom outside!Or until I actually decide to do with this big blank wall, whichever happens first... (I'm guessing Spring will come long before I decide!).Flower Wall Hanging - The Learner Observer-12Now you have a few more projects I urge you to go check out today because they are all insanely amazing!
